Bellingham School District has adopted a new curriculum this year. The topic of focus for the students' writing for 6th grade is "change." This curriculum is very writing intensive. The units the students will be covering in 6th grade are as follows:
Unit 1: Personal Narrative and Expository Writing
Unit 2: Creating a Short Story and Producing a News Story
Unit 3: Writing Letters in the Voices of Characters and Writing a Character Analysis Essay
Unit 4: Revising, Reflecting, and Publishing
Unit 5: Researching and Presenting an Item That Has Changed Over Time and Transforming and Performing a Scene from a Play
Reading Requirements for Language Arts
The number of pages the students reads each semester will be applied to their final grade for the course. It will amount to 20-25% of their final grade, thus emphasizing the importance of reading every night.
Reading requirements per semester are as follows:
90 to 100% 2160-2400 pages
80 to 89% 1920-2159 pages
70 to 79% 1680-1919 pages
60 to 69% 1440-1679 pages
*unless modified per student needs.
Students are required to read two books from the book list. This recommended list was complied from the librarians and teachers within the Bellingham School District. This list can be found in the students Language Arts classroom.
While reading every night students are asked to practice their reading strategies before, during and after they read for 30 minutes.
Different Reading Strategies:
Set your purpose
Preview
Background knowledge
Ask a question
Make predictions
Connections
Visualize
One strategy for setting your purpose for reading is to ask a question. Example: If you are about to read Hunger Games by Susan Collins, you may ask what are the hunger games? What is the meaning of the title within the novel?
